26/02/2021 Race Update Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff 10K – Sunday 5th September 2021

Here at Kidney Wales (race organisers of the Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff 10K & 2K Fun Run), we’re continuing to work closely with Front Runner Events (our event delivery partner) monitoring our ability to host the 2021 event as planned on Sunday 5 September.

Despite the vaccine rollout, with the current lockdown still in place and no further pathway identified or confirmed for mass events to return in Wales, there’s some uncertainty around our ability to host the 2021 event. This means we’re not currently able to open entries for the race in September.

With limited guidance, as a charity we’re trying to make the right decision not just for ourselves but also for you our runners. We’d love to be able to give you certainty at this stage and an organised road race to look forward to come the Autumn, however we feel it would be unfair for us to do at this stage given the uncertainty.  We appreciate your ongoing support for the annual event and to Kidney Wales as race organisers, therefore speaking open and honestly about the situation is fundamental to us.

This event is not only one of the most loved road races here in Wales, but it is also contributing to the life changing work that Kidney Wales do supporting patients suffering with this lifelong condition across Wales.  Throughout the Pandemic, Kidney Wales has been working tirelessly to support our vulnerable Kidney Community and fantastic NHS through these unprecedented times.

We’ve increased our grants available for patients during this time of hardship, whilst offering wellbeing information and support by bringing our community together through our online Facebook group where we share key guidance and advice helping patients feel prepared for every aspect of the pandemic.  We’ve also funded 5,000 re-usable face coverings for chronic kidney patients who are shielding.

Income Generation and Events Manager Danielle Jones said,

We’d like to thank our running community for their generosity, patience and understanding throughout this process, as a charity this really has contributed greatly in our ability to continue our essential work for our kidney community here in Wales. We can’t wait to be able to see you all at our start line very soon!”

We understand and appreciate the difficulty in reading this news, we’re extremely disappointed with the uncertainty around our flagship fundraising event. However, we’ll continue to share any updates with you for the planned event on Sunday 5TH September as soon as we have more certainty. Currently the Welsh Government are updating us every three weeks on changes to restrictions (the last update was 19th February 2021). As soon as we’re able, we’ll contact those runners who’ve deferred from 2020, our charity partners and corporate teams directly.

With Best Wishes,
The Kidney Wales Team
