A team of six at the Merthyr Dialysis Unit are training to complete the Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff 10K on September 1st, in a challenge they set themselves to raise money for Kidney Wales.

Kathryn Amaro ran her first Cardiff 10K a decade ago as a way of getting fit, and after the Merthyr Dialysis Unit expanded in 2014, a few of the staff decided to take part to fundraise for Kidney Wales – a charity close to their hearts that supports kidney patients and their families across Wales.

This year’s team – Esther, Jolanta, Christel, Jayne, Debra and Shirley – hope to replicate previous Merthyr Dialysis Unit Teams successes by raising more than £400 for the cause.

Working in the Merthyr Dialysis Unit, Kathryn and her team see first-hand the vital services Kidney Wales provides to their patients and this inspired them to get a team together for the Cardiff Met Cardiff 10K.

Discussing the charity’s work, Kathryn said: “Kidney Wales offer all sorts of help at the Merthyr Dialysis Unit. Their patient advocate, Shaun, often visits and talks to everyone to find out their concerns and assist people in going through the process of accessing benefits.

“Living with kidney disease can be really tough mentally and it can also be isolating, especially when you’re young, so the ‘Can Do’ project which Kidney Wales runs has really helped some of our younger patients. The initiative has been a great way for them to meet others in similar situations and to share their experiences in a positive way which helps them to grow in confidence.”

Kathryn’s team aren’t the only one keeping themselves busy with training for the race over the summer either.

A few of their patients have also signed up for the 2K race to show their support for the Merthyr Dialysis Unit and the team that has looked after them on a regular basis. The patients are also running to prove that even with regular dialysis treatment, people can set themselves challenges and inspire others.

Reflecting on her previous experiences running the Cardiff Met Cardiff 10K, Kathryn said: “I take part in the Cardiff 10K every year to raise money to support such a great charity. It is a wonderful event and is a lovely day out. There is an incredible atmosphere there every year, I’d recommend it to anyone.”

The Cardiff Met Cardiff 10K is one of the most popular road races in Wales and its flat route makes it perfectly suitable for all running abilities. The 2K Fun Run also means that everyone can get involved and just have fun whilst raising money for charity.
