Neighbouring businesses come together for charity road race
Companies based in Cardiff’s Callaghan Square are leading from the front in the Corporate Team challenge in this year’s 30th anniversary celebrations of the Cardiff 10k.
A number of companies based in the prestigious business hub have signed up to this year’s road race, taking place on Sunday 6 September and organised by the Kidney Wales Foundation.
Darnton B3 Architects, a firm recently involved in the construction of Monmouthshire Housing HQ, are back again for their fourth year, entering two teams in this year’s race. The company, which fundraises for Kidney Wales every year, is back once again to race in support of Wales’ leading kidney charity.
In 2013 the Darnton B3 team exceeded their expectations and came 18th out of 119 teams. This year they are aiming to once again get into the top 20 and surpass their previous record. Martyn Hurley, Architect and the Darnton B3 team leader, said: “Every year we enter a team into the Cardiff 10k and year after year the experience is incredible. The feeling that we get when we finish is indescribable; we live off the buzz for days! The Cardiff 10k is a great opportunity for us to support a local Welsh charity as well as testing our abilities to work well as a team outside of the office. It really is a great day.”
Joining them will be Cardiff’s leading wealth management firm Brewin Dolphin – also of Callaghan Square – who will be entering the team for the first time. A third of its workforce has signed up to take part across two teams, with an aim to raise £1000 for the same charity.
Rachel Biggar, Investment Manager for Brewin Dolphin, and team captain, said: “We are really looking forward to our first Cardiff 10k as a team here at Brewin Dolphin, and joining regulars B3 on the starting line. We’re hoping the day will be a true team building exercise, and all for such a great cause. Within the teams we have people from all levels of the company competing, so it will be interesting to see if some of our trainees can beat the boss!” Through our charity and institutional fund management team we work with lots of charities across Wales and as such we always like to do our bit and give something back where we can.”
The Cardiff 10k is one of the top ten road races in the UK, attracting thousands of runners who take on the scenic city centre course. This year’s race on Sunday September 6th, will see the main 10k event commencing at 10.00am and the 2K family run start at 9.15am.
This year’s race will see more teams than ever take to the streets of the city centre to complete the iconic road race this September, with close to 100 teams signed up to take part so far.
Other Callaghan Square teams who have entered the Cardiff 10k are Deloitte, who raised a huge £2500 for Kidney Wales in 2014. Cheryl Wakeham, Compliance Centre Administrator at Deloitte said and 2014 runner said: “We love competing as a team in the Cardiff 10k, and chose Kidney Wales for our fundraising as it’s a Welsh Charity and a wonderful cause that does excellent work across the country.”
Roy Thomas, Kidney Wales, said: “We are thrilled to see more and more new teams are signing up to raise money for us thirty years on from our first ever run,. This year’s race promises to be a bigger celebration than ever and we want to encourage everyone to sign up and run, whether in a team or as an individual. It’s a great day out for everyone involved and a fantastic way to raise money for charity while having fun and keeping fit in the process.”
Last year’s Cardiff 10k saw a record entry number of almost 4,500 runners take part, who raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Welsh charities, including a record sum for Kidney Wales, which went directly towards improving care and support for kidney patients across Wales.
Registration for the 2015 Cardiff 10k event is now open and people of all ages and abilities are being urged to get involved with this landmark 30th anniversary event.
