Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff 10K Postponement– New Date Sunday 4 September 2022

Kidney Wales, race organisers of The Cardiff Metropolitan University Cardiff 10K are saddened to announce the postponement of the 2021 event scheduled to take place on Sunday 5 September to Sunday 4 September 2022 due to the uncertainty around the national Covid-19 restrictions for large scale events.

We know this will be disappointing news especially with lockdown restrictions starting to ease across the country.   This decision hasn’t been taken lightly, and we’ve prolonged making it until the absolute latest we could.

However, sadly with only 3 months until our planned event date, despite test events currently taking place across the UK we still do not have clarification from Welsh Government on the return of large-scale events in Wales.  At this stage we have no guidance on key factors such as whether social distancing will be required, if there will be capacity restrictions, whether spectators will be permitted and whether participants will be required to provide certification of COVID status.

Each of these factors fundamentally effect how Kidney Wales deliver the event successfully. Without this knowledge at this crucial point prior to race day there isn’t sufficient time to plan, consult and tender an event of our size and complexity and therefore will prevent us from delivering the event that you as our community expect and deserve.

All those who chose to defer to 2021’s race will be contacted by the end of the day Thursday 3 June via email, outlining your entry options (please check your junk / spam folder). If you do not receive this email contact us on cardiff10k@kidneywales.cymru).

Kidney Wales have been organising this much-loved event for 35 years raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for those suffering with kidney disease here in Wales.

Ross Evans Managing Director of Kidney Wales says,

“The postponement of our flagship event for two consecutive years is extremely disappointing for us as a charity, however the safety of you the runners and everyone associated with the event will always remain our top priority”.

At this point, the team at Kidney Wales would like to extend their thanks to everyone involved with the race sponsors, volunteers, suppliers and most importantly you the runners for your patience and continued support to our Kidney Community throughout this extremely difficult time.

Despite the postponement of the event this year, the team at Kidney Wales are attempting to recoup some of the fundraising income that we are expecting to lose due to the event not being able to go ahead.  For this we need your help!   You can take on the Cardiff 10K virtually between Sunday 29 August and Sunday 5 September for your chance to gain your finishers medal and tshirt all whilst supporting a specific Kidney Wales project.

Following significant interest from kidney patients and families, Kidney Wales has recently announced the funding of two research studies with the aim of discovering how effective the Covid-19 vaccines are for dialysis and transplant patients who are clinically vulnerable to the disease.

All proceeds from this virtual race will help bring this project to life for the kidney community across Wales and the UK, giving answers to concerns that our community are faced with as lockdown is beginning to ease and shielding lifted.  Sign up to our virtual event here: https://www.runclusive.com/events/cardiff-metropolitan-university-cardiff-10k/

At this point, the team at Kidney Wales would like to extend their thanks to you as our running community for your patience and continued support to our Kidney Community throughout this extremely difficult time.
